Brette Benedict: Season Reflections

Our Fifth Anniversary has come to a close, and it's time to look back on the year and see what stood out to the dancers. Congrats to Brette on her promotion to Lead Artist for the 2017-2018 Season!

Brette Benedict

Q. Pick one word to describe this season overall. Why?

A. Growth.  This year has been a huge year of growth. I've been challenged and pushed technically and artistically as well as spiritually.

Q. Overall, what ballet was your favorite this season? Why?

A. My favorite ballet this year has definitely been Scarlet. The whole process of creating the ballet, the character of Hester and then the actual performance was a wonderful experience. I've never been more fulfilled as a dancer than that moment when the petals fell down at the end of Scarlet.  What made the whole process so sweet was God's hand in my life at the time.  The challenges that I faced through the process and then experiencing the completion of the whole thing at the end can only be described as the wonderful working of the Holy Spirit in my life!

Q. What has challenged you the most? How did you grow?

A. Honestly, Julianna Slager, our Artistic Director, challenges me the most. No matter what she wants to create, she challenges me to step outside my comfort zone and to keep stretching outside my boundaries as an artist.

Q. A particularly funny or memorable moment?

A. We always have so many laughable and memorable moments that we create together as a company.  My most memorable and cherished moment was the weekend of Scarlet. Yes, my performance of Hester was memorable but sharing the role with Lauren and creating together bonded us even more as friends.

Q. What are you up to this summer?

A. This summer I will mostly be here at the studios with Ballet 5:8! Come to our summer classes!  For my time off my plans are still up in the air, but spending time with family will be a part of that.
