Our Fifth Anniversary has come to a close, and it's time to look back on the year and see what stood out to the dancers. Congrats to Laura Peterman on her promotion to Senior Apprentice for the 2017-2018 Season!

Q. Pick one word to describe this season overall. Why?

A. Challenging -- Technically, physically, and mentally, I have been pushed and grown in wonderful and unexpected ways this year. This was my first season being part of a professional company, and making the jump from student to professional is, in my opinion, one of the hardest moments in a dance career. However, everyone in the company has been so encouraging and uplifting, and I am so grateful for all the support and instruction I have received.

Q. What ballet was your favorite this season? Why?

A. Ripple Effect was one of my favorites to dance, but also one of my favorites to watch. The movement is fun and quirky, and then quickly takes a serious dark turn. I get chills every time I watch the pas de deux.

Q. What has challenged you the most? How did you grow?

A. Scarlet was challenging in many ways, especially in terms of sheer brain power it takes to be part of the corps ballet - maintaining a strong character even when you're not in the spotlight, remembering spacing and timing, dancing as one body... Mentally it took a lot of focus, which was really good for me.

I saw the most growth in myself over the course of the season, and in the corps in general, in Surprised By Joy. By the end of the spring season, the unity, clarity, stamina, and technical ability we had was a big change from the first time we performed it in the fall. That was so exciting and encouraging to be a part of.

Q. A particularly funny or memorable moment?

A. Our performance in Brooklyn stands out to me as most memorable. That night was such a blessing; the audience was fantastic, the companies we collaborated with were such an inspiration and encouragement, and as a company, we felt so unified and uplifted. We were all exhausted as it was close to the end of a long tour, but that was definitely one of my favorite shows from the year.

Q. Is there a particular quote or idea that has been inspirational to you this season?

I find inspiration in so many things, but one idea that has been at the back of my mind the past few months is having a spirit of thankfulness and appreciation. I am so blessed by the people and experiences in my life, and I can't help but be overwhelmed with gratitude when I reflect on the past year.

Q. What are you up to this summer?

A. This summer I will be traveling back to Canada to spend time with my family and see old friends. I'll definitely spend a lot of time camping, hiking, and canoeing...
