Season Reflections: Brette Benedict

Before everyone headed out for the summer, we asked the Company Artists to share a little about their experiences over the past season. This interview is from Company Artist Brette Benedict, who has been with the company since 2014. Brette will be returning to Ballet 5:8 for our Fifth Anniversary Season with a promotion to Solo Artist - congrats Brette!

Q. Pick one word to describe your experience this past performing season.

A. Growth. From the beginning of the summer Preston Miller challenged me to move bigger. As the season continues on it continues to surprise me how much Julianna is able to push me as a dancer. I've learned and grown a lot as a dancer this year understanding my body better and looking to keep pushing.

Q. What was your favorite moment onstage?

A. My favorite moment on stage was my last performance of King Nebuchadnezzar. I really enjoyed performing the role each time.  The last performance, however, I felt like I had complete freedom to dance and to act. It's a beautiful moment as a dancer when you are able to trust your technique and really live and dance in the moment.

Q. Looking back, would you say that you learned something new about yourself or found yourself stretched out of your comfort zone?

A. I've been grown and stretched in many ways. One in particular is the use of my technique. Julianna has been attentive in pushing me to keep using more of the foundation that I already have and go further. You can never stop growing in this field and I'm thankful for a director who continues to see the potential!

Q. What is something that took you by surprise?

A. Looking back, I'm so surprised at how much we travelled this past season! I'm so grateful for everywhere we've been. All the love and support we've received by so many families and communities. I really enjoyed seeing how God used us in all these different cities.

Q. What are you up to over the summer?

A. This summer is quite full for me. I just got done spending a couple weeks down south. Returned to Chicago for a couple of days and now I'm in the mountains of Montana. Enjoying God's beauty and time with some extended family. When I return I will be teaching for a week in Peoria. Then I look forward to teaching for Ballet 5:8's Summer Intensive. To wrap up my summer I will then head over to Michigan. I will be training to receive my yoga certification with Living Waters Yoga.
