It is our pleasure to welcome Stephanie Joe to Ballet 5:8 as a Company Artist for the 2016-2017 Season. Here on the blog, we are asking each of the new dancers a few questions so we can get to know them ahead of the upcoming season.
Q. Where will you be coming to Ballet 5:8 from? Where are you from originally?
A. I grew up in Houston, TX, where I trained pre-professionally at Houston Ballet’s Academy for six years. During the past four years, I pursued interdisciplinary studies in business, dance, and design at Duke University in Durham, NC. While at Duke, I actively participated in the Dance Program, choreographing and performing, and I also co-founded and served as artistic director for the university’s student-run ballet company.
Q. What attracted you to Ballet 5:8?
A. My experience with dance has revealed it to be an incredibly powerful medium through which to inspire others, to create reflective experiences, and to open avenues for honest dialogue with both audiences and other artists. Ballet 5:8’s mission melds the pursuit of artistic excellence and innovation with the meaningful expression of truths based in the Christian faith in a way that really resonates with my personal artistic approach.
Q. Why do you dance?
A. I feel that dancing is what I was created to do! The fulfillment, joy, depth of feeling, and fullness of life that I feel when I dance is indescribable. I love dance in itself - taking class, going through plies, tendus, adagio… but performing reminds me how dance can be so meaningful both for those in it and watching it. Dance is really a special opportunity to inspire and be inspired.
Q. What is something you enjoy about Chicago or think you’ll enjoy about Chicago?
A. I love how vibrant the arts scene is in Chicago and how the community can support a variety of arts organizations, from established companies building on existing heritages to newer companies just starting out. It’s a place where you can really pursue the arts, and I’m excited to immerse myself in this community where I can learn from others and grow.
Q. What is one thing people will be surprised to learn about you?
A. I also really enjoy singing! Growing up, I was very involved in choir and also performed in several musicals.
Q. What are you most looking forward to about this performing season?
A. I’m looking forward to participating in the creation of new works by Artistic Director Julianna Slager and sharing meaningful stories with our audiences.
