The Ballet 5:8 Teaching Philosophy

The style and teaching philosophy at Ballet 5:8’s Summer Program is based on Vaganova’s teachings, and supplemented with the teachings of Marcia Dale Weary and the School of American Ballet. The result is a methodical program perfectly suited to the demands of 21st-century ballet. Ballet 5:8's commitment to a comprehensive and holistic approach is the hallmark of our Summer Programs. Each day begins with ballet technique and pointe or pre-pointe classes, laying the foundation for strong technical skills.

In the afternoons, our Summer Program participants take classes such as Pas de Deux, Variations, Men’s Allegro, Port de Bras and Progressing Ballet Technique. These classes target specific areas of growth and facilitate substantial progress. But that's just the beginning.

At Ballet 5:8, we believe in nurturing more than just our ballet technique. Our Summer Program curriculum encompasses various styles, including modern, contemporary, jazz, acting, spanish dance, composition, street dance, and improv. This diversity challenges dancers to adapt to the ever-evolving world of choreography.

Moreover, our Summer Program integrates Company Repertoire at every level, giving students a glimpse into the professional dance world. In the Choreography Intensive program, participants even get the opportunity to create and perform their own works, fostering creativity and individual expression.

But it doesn't stop there. We also understand the importance of wellness, nutrition, mental health, and emotional resilience, and we incorporate these into our Summer Programs. In addition to dance classes, Ballet 5:8 offers conditioning and cross-training classes led by certified instructors. These classes, including Pilates, Progressing Ballet Technique, BOSU, strength training, safe stretching, and plyometrics, not only help participants build physical strength during the intensives but also equip them with essential tools for year-round training.

For our advanced program levels, our dedicated Company strength training staff provides personalized coaching to enhance full-body strength and mobility.

Julianna Rubio Slager, a master teacher with over two decades of experience, brings a unique teaching philosophy to our Summer Programs, emphasizing a holistic approach that nurtures both the technical and artistic aspects of the art form. Her expertise is well-recognized, and she currently holds the position 2023 National Visiting Fellow at the School of American Ballet.

At Ballet 5:8, we take pride in offering Summer Programs that not only equip students with outstanding dance skills but also foster their overall well-being, including their physical health, mental wellness, and emotional resilience, preparing them for a successful and fulfilling dance career.
