The House on Mango Street

Spring 2026 World Premiere

Ballet 5:8’s Second Company brings Sandra Cisneros’ acclaimed novel The House on Mango Street to life in a moving new ballet adaptation, premiering Spring 2026. Through original choreography and vivid storytelling, this evocative work follows Esperanza Cordero—a young Latina growing up in a vibrant yet confining Chicago neighborhood—as she comes of age and begins to imagine a life beyond the walls of her house on Mango Street.

The ballet explores Esperanza’s internal and external world with rich visual language, illuminating the struggles and beauty of her community. Audiences journey with her through moments of wonder, hardship, and quiet strength as she grapples with cultural expectations, the complexities of womanhood, and the power of her own voice.

Created by Latina choreographers and artists, this production honors the heritage, cadence, and emotional truth of Cisneros’ groundbreaking work. It is more than a retelling—it is a celebration of resilience, cultural identity, and the enduring strength of women’s voices across generations.

The House on Mango Street will premiere in partnership with Chicago-area schools and libraries, expanding access to the arts and literature for students and families throughout the city.
