Elizabeth Marlin | 22/23 Season in Review

One of our Ballet 5:8 traditions at the end of each performance season is to ask the artists of the company to share some reflections with us. A special thank you to the artists of the company for sharing about their experiences in the 2022/23 Season.

Q. Pick one word to describe the 2022/23 Season. Why?

A. Immense. There was a wide variety of repertoire and a lot of choreography! It was immensely challenging yet equally rewarding, with a lot of personal and artistic growth.

Q. Can you share a favorite moment from on- or off-stage?

A. Too many to choose from! One of my favorite parts of the season was getting to tour to Belhaven University to perform [Julianna Rubio Slager’s] Look to the East with the Belhaven University Dance Department. I would also be remiss if I did not shout out my BareFace tea parties with King Trom!

Q. You performed many works this season! Does one stand out as the most meaningful or most notable for you personally? Why?

A. BareFace. I always love story ballets and the opportunity to bring Psyche to life was quite humbling. Spending so much time delving into the character, creating her mannerisms, and learning to understand her motivations was a lot of work but an extremely valuable process. I learned a lot about myself along the way too!

Q. What or who has inspired you this season?

A. I have been so inspired by my coworkers this season. Dancing alongside them every day in class and rehearsal is such a privilege and I count myself extremely lucky to have their friendship as well.

Q. What are you looking forward to next season?

A. Everything! I am looking forward to revisiting old ballets, creating new ones, going on tour, and performing in Chicago! I am especially excited for the return of Butterfly to the stage.
