Golden Sessions

Premiere: October, 2020
Choreography: Julianna Rubio Slager

Costumes: Lorianne Robertson

Based on C.S. Lewis’ The Four Loves

English only has one word for love, but Greek has four: Storge, Philia, Eros, and Agape. Julianna Rubio Slager’s Golden Sessions explores the various textures of the four Greek words for love, and how each one captures a unique aspect of our relationships.

“In a perfect Friendship this Appreciative love is... humbled before the rest, when the whole group is together; each bringing out all that is best, wisest, or funniest in all the others. Those are the golden sessions; when four or five of us after a hard day's walk have come to our inn; when our slippers are on, our feet spread out toward the blaze and our drinks are at our elbows; when the whole world, and something beyond the world, opens itself to our minds as we talk. Life — natural life — has no better gift to give. Who could have deserved it?” -C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves

Golden Sessions returns to the stage this spring as a part of the 10FOLD program. All tickets on sale now

“This season of life has drawn out what we truly value in relationships. Each one is a reminder of the sweat, the tears and the hard-earned privilege of just moving forward. Precious moments with loved ones, those sessions, have begun to take on a golden hue in my memory. They’re hard, yes, but they’re treasured.”

What People Are Saying

"While there are many things to like about each of Slager's Lewis-inspired works, there are few similarities in the flavor, texture and subject of each ballet. With a moving score featuring composers John Adams, Oliver Davis, and Ezio Bosso, lovely classical choreography, and superb performances by the cast, I expect Golden Sessions will offer a fresh and uplifting experience for Ballet 5:8 fans and newbies alike, regardless of their interest in Lewis or literature."
