Look to the East

Every morning the sun rises. Darkness is defeated each day. Look to the East reminds us of the power of the resurrection.

When the world is at its darkest, where do we turn? Every night, far off in the east, the darkness slowly gives way to the rising sun. It’s a daily reminder of the steadiness woven into nature. Every morning is a little resurrection of the world, passing from darkness to tangible light. Resurrection and the passing from death to life is intricately patterned across nature. From the death of a seed to the falling rain, our eyes are taught to look for resurrection, for hope in the darkness.

These whispers of nature find their fulfillment in the story of Jesus.  When he emerged from the tomb alive, he breathed hope into a dark world that what is dead can be made alive again. And as he left his world and returned to heaven, his departure brought Holy Spirit into the hearts of his disciples at Pentecost. And even now, millennia after his resurrection, his followers look to the east and await his return on the Mount of Olives.

Look to the East highlights the calm, controlled power of the dancers. They embody hope. They move across the stage as those who contain a fountain of hope within themselves. Even though darkness surrounds and the sunrise feels distant, Look to the East reminds of the faithfulness of the sunrise. It begins with a subtle glow and then breaks across the horizon with a flash. You can choose to look at the darkness, or you can choose to look to the east and fix your eyes on the hope that is coming.
